Cook’n is reputedly the most popular recipe manager software. I didn’t like it, though. The interface feels like Microsoft Access. What’s worse, the installation modified my HOSTS file without asking nicely first, and the software evidently runs its own web server on port 5918 of my localhost, which it attempts to access when making a grocery shopping list. I really don’t see the need to open up that attack vector just to make a shopping list, so…no to Cook’n.

Automatically create a table of contents in a PDF file
Monday, September 9th, 2019There are a couple of software applications that can automatically create a table of contents in a PDF file.
- EverMap AutoBookmark Plug-in for Adobe Acrobat ($219). Creates a table of contents using the bookmarks in your PDF file. Options for formatting the table of contents are extensive. Any page numbers on the body pages must be created separately. Adobe Acrobat can do this.
- Kofax Power PDF Standard ($129). Creates a table of contents using the bookmarks in your PDF file. Options for formatting the table of contents are limited. Any page numbers on the body pages must be created separately. Adobe Acrobat can do this. Alternatively, Kofax Power PDF Advanced ($179) can label the pages of your document with Bates numbering in addition to creating a table of contents.
Pocket is a read later service for the web. It correctly picks up images from articles in The Economist. It does not handle line breaks correctly when printing, cutting some lines at the tops and bottoms of pages in half and completely obscuring others.
